Centre man convicted of narcotics and paraphernalia offenses

by Sophia Bennett

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — A Cherokee County jury found Jonathan Butler of Centre guilty on November 19, 2025, of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana 2nd degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Centre Police Department said the charges arose from an August 31, 2023, incident when Officer Josh Thompson discovered Butler’s vehicle parked behind a closed business at Cherokee Plaza. After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, officers found narcotics in the driver’s side compartment, leading to Butler’s arrest.

During the trial, the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office presented body-cam footage, witness testimony, and expert analysis from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

After deliberations, the jury returned a guilty verdict. Butler now faces up to 10 years in prison for his convictions. The police department expressed gratitude to the district attorney’s office and forensic experts for their assistance in the case.
