John Hyman Sentenced to 10 Years for Baltimore Robberies

Armed robbery, carjacking tied to GPS-tracked stolen cash

BALTIMORE, MD — A 21-year-old Baltimore man, John Hyman, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in two armed robberies and a carjacking that took place on November 29, 2022, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.

The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander, will be followed by three years of supervised release. Hyman’s co-defendant, Devin Grimes, was previously sentenced to 10 years for his role in the same crimes.

Details of the Crime Spree

According to Hyman’s guilty plea, he and two other accomplices began their crime spree by robbing a 7-Eleven store in East Baltimore. One of the men brandished a handgun during the robbery while they looted the cash register.

What the suspects didn’t realize was that the stolen money contained a GPS tracker, which alerted law enforcement and enabled them to follow the suspects’ movements in real time.

The tracker led officers to a Stokos carry-out restaurant, just 0.6 miles away, where the group then carjacked a food delivery driver, stealing his keys and cash.

Police Response and Arrest

Officers from Baltimore City and County Police Departments, along with aviation units, quickly mobilized. Aerial surveillance spotted two vehicles matching the tracker’s movement. When the vehicles split up to evade capture, officers pursued both.

All suspects, including Hyman, were apprehended. During the arrest, law enforcement recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson firearm used in the crimes.

Prosecutors Speak Out

U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes praised the collaboration between ATF Baltimore, BPD, and BCPD, stating:

“This case underscores the importance of coordinated law enforcement and the effective use of technology to track down violent offenders.”
