Winston-Salem, N.C. — An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with a shooting that took place at Carver High School on Thursday evening, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Police say the shooting occurred around 7:59 p.m. in the school’s parking lot, following a disturbance involving multiple individuals. Several gunshots were fired, and a juvenile later showed up at a nearby hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to authorities.
John Bekham Panzo, 18, has been arrested and faces multiple serious charges, including:
Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
Assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury
Inciting a riot
Discharging a firearm from an enclosure
Possession of a weapon on educational property
Operating a vehicle without a license
Reckless driving to endanger
Panzo is currently being held without bond.
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) released a statement expressing concern over community violence impacting school grounds:
“It is troubling when violence from the community spills over onto our campuses. Safety is our top priority… We urge our community to join us in addressing the root causes of violence before it reaches our students.”
Officials confirmed that neither Panzo nor the victim are current students in the WS/FCS system.
Authorities believe the incident was isolated, and the Gun Crime Reduction Unit is continuing the investigation.
