JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WHLT) — A Laurel man, Joe Evans, 48, was arrested after a high-speed chase on Tuesday, April 15. According to Jones County deputies, Evans fled a traffic stop in Laurel and led law enforcement officers on a chase that ended at the Lone Oak Apartments on Hoy Road.

Evans crashed his vehicle at the apartment complex and fled on foot, but deputies pursued him. During the pursuit, Evans reportedly opened a bag of powdered fentanyl and threw it at Sergeant Joel Brogan. The fentanyl struck Brogan, and deputies quickly administered three doses of Narcan before he was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center (SCRMC) for treatment. Sergeant Brogan was later released to return to duty.

Agent Chase Smith sustained a hand injury during the arrest and was also treated at South Central Urgent Care before being cleared to return to work.

Evans, who was already out on bond for a previous felony charge of possession of a controlled substance, now faces several charges, including sale of a controlled substance, trafficking a controlled substance, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing in a motor vehicle, and multiple traffic violations. He is being held at the Jones County Adult Detention Facility pending his initial appearance in court.
