A special police team from Jodhpur Range successfully apprehended a notorious drug trafficker, Chimaram, from Madhya Pradesh on Saturday after six years of evading the law.
Disguised as fellow smugglers, the team lured Chimaram to a hotel under the pretext of a drug deal and arrested him while he was having tea.
Chimaram, aged 30, was carrying a reward of Rs1 lakh and was known for his cunning tactics, including outrunning police by accelerating his vehicle and using alternate routes to smuggle drug consignments.
Inspector General of Police (Jodhpur Range) Vikas Kumar said Chimaram had 15 cases registered against him across various police stations in Rajasthan. He had been jailed three times but managed to escape multiple times, including incidents where he fired at police officers in Dhorimanna (2015), Barmer Sadar (2016), Nagana (2018), and Sumerpur and Shiv area in 2019.
Known for his exceptional driving skills, Chimaram charged smugglers between Rs20,000 to Rs1 lakh for safely delivering drug-laden trucks to their destinations. His reputation was so feared that smugglers held auctions to secure his services.
Kumar further explained that Chimaram operated mostly through internet calls and hid out in southern states, conducting drug runs with trucks and modern weapons. The police tracked an associate and posed as smugglers to track down Chimaram in Madhya Pradesh. Fortunately, he was unarmed at the time of arrest, which ensured a smooth capture.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking in the region.
