Cracking down on cross-border drug trafficking, the Amritsar Rural Police arrested a notorious peddler with 6 kilograms of heroin on Tuesday night. The accused, Jobanpreet Singh, is a resident of Narli village under Khalra police station in Tarn Taran district.
Acting on a tip-off that he was headed towards the city to deliver a consignment, a police team swiftly intercepted him near the Khasa bridge while he was riding a Splendor motorcycle. Officers recovered 6 kg of heroin from his possession along with the motorcycle and a mobile phone.
Upon examining his phone, investigators found evidence that Jobanpreet was in contact with Pakistani smugglers and had been tasked with delivering the narcotics across different parts of Punjab.
A case has been registered at the Gharinda police station under the NDPS Act, and Jobanpreet has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
According to Attari DSP Lakhwinder Singh, the investigation is ongoing to uncover the full network, including forward and backward linkages to the larger cross-border smuggling operation.
