DARE COUNTY, N.C. — An 84-year-old woman, Joan Casey of Newport News, Virginia, faces charges following a fatal head-on collision on June 24 that resulted in the death of her husband, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (SHP).
The crash occurred at approximately 2:43 p.m. on NC 12 near Lela Court. Authorities reported that Casey was traveling southbound when she crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound vehicle.
Joan Casey was transported to Outer Banks Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Her husband, 90-year-old John Casey, who was a passenger in her vehicle, was taken to Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Officials noted he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The driver and occupants of the other vehicle involved were unharmed. After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, Joan Casey was charged with Left of Center.
