Mckenzie Arrested After Alleged Assault During Theft Attempt

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — A woman accused of assaulting a Hair Depot employee several months ago was arrested on Sunday evening in Liberty Township.

Jhamilla Mckenzie, 28, was taken into custody after a traffic stop revealed she had an active warrant for her arrest from Boardman. The charges stem from an October incident at the Hair Depot on Market Street. Authorities say surveillance footage showed Mckenzie attempting to leave the store with unpaid items. When an employee confronted her, she slapped a phone out of the employee’s hand and punched him multiple times in the face.

At the time of the incident, Mckenzie was suspected of being involved in another theft, and during the investigation, Youngstown police found merchandise from the store near Hillman and Judson. Police continued their search for Mckenzie following the altercation, which led to her arrest.

During her arrest, Mckenzie was uncooperative with officers, initially refusing to provide identification or comply with instructions. Additionally, she claimed to be eight months pregnant and admitted to using cocaine, but medical staff cleared her for jail.

Mckenzie is scheduled for arraignment in Mahoning County Common Pleas court on Tuesday. She is also facing misdemeanor charges of failure to disclose personal information and possession of drug paraphernalia from a September 2024 incident.
