GEORGIA, Vt. (WCAX) — A Vermont couple, Jena Mays and Travis Dashnow, were arrested last month after their three children tested positive for crack cocaine, authorities say.
The incident began during a routine patrol at the Georgia Park and Ride, where a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy noticed a truck with its lights on. Inside were Mays, Dashnow, and their three children.
The couple told the deputy they were there to gather belongings from the truck, which had become inoperable due to a crash. Upon inspection, deputies discovered drug paraphernalia and evidence of crack cocaine within reach of the children.
Subsequent testing confirmed the presence of crack cocaine in the children’s systems.
Both Mays and Dashnow pleaded not guilty to charges of child cruelty and reckless endangerment. They were released on conditions pending further legal proceedings.
The children have since been placed in the care of a family member, according to officials.
The investigation remains ongoing.
