n a shocking case of teenage betrayal, Shivaji Nagar police arrested 19-year-old Jeeshan Shaikh for murdering his 16-year-old friend, Shaheen Shaikh, by poisoning him with pesticide mixed in an energy drink.
The incident occurred on June 28, when both friends reportedly fell ill after consuming the drink at Jeeshan’s home in Govandi. While Shaheen was declared dead the following day, Jeeshan survived and initially claimed it was an accidental poisoning. A case of accidental death was registered.
However, police suspicions grew due to inconsistencies in Jeeshan’s story. “The post-mortem revealed the presence of a poisonous substance, not something typically found in energy drinks,” a police officer said.
Upon recovery and further questioning, Jeeshan confessed to the crime. He admitted to feeling used and sidelined by Shaheen, who he believed favored other friends while exploiting him financially. The motive stemmed from deep-rooted jealousy and emotional resentment.
According to investigators, Jeeshan devised the murder plan while visiting his native village in Uttar Pradesh during Eid. There, he acquired pesticide and brought it back to Mumbai. On June 28, he laced the drink with the substance and offered it to Shaheen. To deflect suspicion, he drank a small quantity himself and feigned illness.
Jeeshan, who worked as a painter in a local garage, has been arrested under charges of murder and is currently in police custody.
