WESTBROOK, Maine — A South Carolina man has been arrested after robbing the Chase Bank at Rock Row in Westbrook Thursday morning, police said.

The robbery occurred around 10:51 a.m., with the suspect fleeing on foot toward Larrabee Road. Despite an extensive search involving two K9 units, officers initially could not locate the man.

Later that evening, Westbrook police announced that 61-year-old Jean Gendron of Smyrna, South Carolina, was taken into custody just before 5 p.m. in Londonderry, New Hampshire, as he stepped off a bus.

Gendron is being held in New Hampshire on a fugitive from justice charge and will be extradited to Maine, where he faces robbery charges.

Police credited Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Scarborough Police Department, and Portland Police Department for their assistance in the swift response.
