A Tallahassee man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he stole more than $65,000 from his former employer.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Jay Stewart previously worked for a local electric company and is accused of diverting customer payments for personal gain.
The investigation began when a customer reported paying their bill to Stewart through the Square app. However, the business owner told investigators the company does not accept payments through Square.
Authorities say several other clients also reported making payments to Stewart via Square or by check, but those funds never reached the company. Investigators allege Stewart created the Square account himself and used it to funnel payments into his own business.
He is also accused of misusing a company credit card to make purchases through his personal Amazon account. Stewart was terminated in October 2024 after his employer discovered a conflict of interest involving a personal business he was operating.
Between October 2020 and February 2024, Stewart allegedly stole a total of $66,045.06. He now faces charges including organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and fraudulent use of a credit card.
