Puri, Odisha – In a dramatic rescue operation, Puri police arrested four men on Thursday for allegedly kidnapping Jay Chakraborty, a Kolkata-based businessman, with an intent to murder him at sea over a Rs17 lakh financial dispute linked to online gaming.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Jay Chakraborty (36), originally from Kamrup Metropolitan district in Assam, and now living in Kolkata, was abducted from Konark while visiting with a friend from Bhubaneswar.
According to Puri SP Prateek Singh, the accused had hatched a murder plot due to an unresolved money issue. Chakraborty had used the bank account of one of the accused, Chanchal Jana (35), for online gaming transactions, paying him a commission. However, Rs17 lakh was allegedly transferred from Jana’s account to Chakraborty’s associates without consent. Despite several warnings, the money wasn’t returned.
Chakraborty had promised repayment by October 7, but failed to deliver. Enraged, Jana, a construction contractor, orchestrated the abduction with help from:
Chanchal Jana (35) – West Bengal
Sultan Ahamad Khan (48) – West Bengal
Sk Baki Bulla (36) – West Bengal
Nirbhya Maharatha (50) – Jagatsinghpur district, Odisha
The gang took Chakraborty on a route through remote villages to avoid CCTV detection at highway toll booths. He was physically assaulted, and the kidnappers demanded Rs30 lakh from his associates, threatening to kill him if the money wasn’t transferred to Jana’s account.
The group even hired a boat to allegedly carry out the murder at Paradip. However, acting on specific intelligence, police rescued Chakraborty in Paradip and arrested all four suspects with assistance from Jagatsinghpur police.
Further investigation revealed that Chanchal Jana had a prior kidnapping attempt case registered in Digha, West Bengal, involving Chakraborty and his wife just three weeks earlier.
