RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) — A man accused of orchestrating an online vehicle scam using fake Facebook accounts has been arrested by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Leon Lott confirmed that 31-year-old Javon Reeves was taken into custody on Tuesday. He faces two felony charges of obtaining goods by false pretenses exceeding $10,000.
Investigators allege Reeves created multiple fake Facebook profiles, using false names and photos to pose as a trustworthy vehicle buyer. His targets were primarily sellers of UTVs (Utility Terrain Vehicles).
According to officials, Reeves contacted sellers and requested their bank information under the pretense of wiring them payments. He would then send victims what appeared to be legitimate wire transfer confirmations before taking possession of the vehicles.
However, the wire transfers were fake, and the funds would eventually bounce. Authorities believe Reeves then resold the stolen vehicles to unsuspecting buyers.
Reeves is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, and the investigation remains active.
