MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) — A 42-year-old man accused of stabbing a Mount Pleasant Police officer and being shot in return during an altercation Tuesday is now facing criminal charges.
Jason McConnell Yount was charged with attempted murder on Thursday, according to a statement from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The incident unfolded after officers responded to a report of a man exposing himself at a bank on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard.
When the officer confronted Yount, authorities say he attacked the officer with a knife, prompting the officer to return fire and shoot Yount. Both individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized but have since been released.
SLED is continuing its investigation and has not disclosed further details as of Friday.
This shooting marks the 9th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year and the first involving the Mount Pleasant Police Department in 2025.
For comparison, there were 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina in 2024. There were no such incidents in Mount Pleasant during the previous year. Yount’s mugshot has not yet been posted on the Charleston County jail website.
