BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A Bakersfield man has been sentenced to 25 years to life for the killing of his 74-year-old roommate at an east Bakersfield room-and-board facility in June 2025.

Jason Aguilar Garibay, convicted on Jan. 28, 2026, of first-degree murder, elder abuse, and causing great bodily injury to a person over 70, pleaded not guilty on June 4, 2025. The victim, Domingo Trevino, was found dead at the facility on the 400 block of South Williams Street.

According to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, Garibay attacked Trevino in the early morning hours, kicking and stomping on his head more than 20 times while he was on the ground. Garibay briefly paused to have another tenant witness the assault before resuming the attack. Trevino was pronounced dead at the scene, suffering massive trauma to the head and neck.

District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer noted, “Elders in our community are particularly vulnerable and therefore more prone to being targeted by abusers. This act was among the most serious cases of elder abuse our community has witnessed, resulting in a devastating outcome. Garibay will pay for the life he took.”

When law enforcement arrived, Garibay admitted to the crime and stated he intended to kill Trevino, expressing pride in his actions. The case highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and protection of elderly residents in shared living facilities.
