CAMDEN — A Camden man has been sentenced to 33 years in state prison for carrying out two gunpoint robberies at a Collingswood apartment and leading police on a pursuit in 2021.
25-year-old Jaquis Burton received his sentence on Monday, October 20th, and must serve at least 28 years before becoming eligible for parole.
A jury found Burton guilty in June on multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, eluding police, theft, aggravated assault, criminal restraint, endangering the welfare of a child, and simple assault.
Prosecutors detailed that on the night of January 10th, 2021, Burton entered a Parkview Towers apartment in Collingswood at gunpoint. Inside, he restrained two women and two children, ages 3 and 9, and demanded money. He pistol-whipped one of the women, causing significant injuries.
As he fled, Burton robbed and assaulted an unrelated man in the lobby, again using a gun and physically attacking the victim. He then fled to Camden and led police on a lengthy pursuit before being apprehended.
Investigators determined the robbery was triggered by Burton’s girlfriend, 25-year-old Anada Shanks of Lindenwold, being unhappy with a tattoo she received from someone associated with the apartment. Shanks, accused of acting as a co-conspirator, was also arrested and faces similar charges in Camden County Superior Court.
