DE PERE (WLUK) — A 59-year-old De Pere woman has been charged with stealing more than $111,000 from her employer, allegedly using the money to pay medical bills, according to a criminal complaint.

Janet Maass faces one count of theft by an employee. Her initial court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 14, court records show.

Investigators say the thefts occurred over a five-year period while Maass was employed at Creative Sign Co., where she worked as an office manager.

The company’s owner contacted police and turned over a letter from Maass, in which she admitted the funds were accounted for and asked not to be terminated.

According to the complaint, Maass became a salaried employee in 2020, but continued to pay herself overtime despite no longer being eligible. Those unauthorized payments totaled $111,170.62.

When questioned by police, Maass said she intended to repay the money, but declined to answer further questions without consulting her attorney.
