Janardhan Mondal (36) was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, Rina Mondal (33), in the car parking lot of a Kasba complex on Thursday afternoon. He was presented before the Alipore court on Friday and was sent to police custody until May 2.
During the court hearing, Public Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal informed the court that Janardhan Mondal needed to be interrogated further to recover the murder weapon and that a reconstruction of the murder was required for clarity.
While Mondal admitted to killing his wife, he claimed it was due to suspicions that Rina was involved in an illicit affair. However, the police have other theories. They suspect that Rina was planning to file a domestic violence case against Janardhan, which may have enraged him. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the exact motive behind the murder.
According to police sources, a blood-stained purse and slippers belonging to Rina were found at the murder scene. These items will be sent for forensic examination to further aid the investigation.
The brutal incident occurred around 1:15 pm on Thursday, when Rina was reportedly attacked with a chopper and slashed multiple times in the Kasba complex parking lot. The crime left residents of the residential complex on RK Chatterjee Road in complete shock.
