EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Jan Carlo Castillo, 25, of El Paso, has pleaded guilty to the brutal murder of 34-year-old Brian Valentin Almanza, who was found dead in his apartment last September.
The plea hearing took place on April 17, with Castillo receiving a 45-year prison sentence as part of the agreement. He also waived his right to appeal.
Almanza’s body was discovered on Sept. 12, 2023, by his ex-wife, who had grown concerned after not hearing from him for two days—a break in their usual daily communication.
She visited his residence on the 9100 block of Kernel Circle in the Lower Valley, where she found the door slightly open and signs of forced entry. Inside, she discovered Almanza’s body, covered in blood, and immediately called 911.
According to El Paso police, Almanza had suffered multiple deep slashes and lacerations. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed Castillo, identifiable by his arm and face tattoos, approaching the apartment on the night of Sept. 11 and leaving shortly after while seemingly hiding an object in a bundle of clothes.
Ten days later, on Sept. 21, officers spotted Castillo jaywalking on Alameda Avenue and apprehended him after a brief foot chase.
“There was no apparent motive for this brutal killing,” said District Attorney James Montoya. “This conviction was made possible by the dedicated efforts of the El Paso Police Department and cooperating witnesses. Our office remains committed to protecting the community by prosecuting violent offenders.”
