WALDORF, Md. — James Walter Counce, 33, of Seat Pleasant, was arrested on December 29, 2024, after attempting to rob the Giant Food store on Crain Highway in Waldorf. According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Counce demanded money from store employees, stole a small amount of merchandise, and was later apprehended by officers.
The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. on December 29, when a robbery in progress was reported to the sheriff’s office. Officers arrived at the store to find Counce exiting with two bags of sweet potatoes and other items. Employees immediately identified him as the suspect.
Counce had initially attempted to force his way into the store’s cash room, banging on the door and demanding money from the manager. When the manager was able to lock the door, Counce moved to the customer service area, where he tried to open the cash registers but was unsuccessful. He then picked up the sweet potatoes and trail mix, leaving the store without paying. The stolen items were valued at $27.56.
As Counce exited the building, officers issued verbal commands for him to stop, but he ignored them and attempted to flee. He resisted arrest, and a K-9 unit was deployed to help detain him. After a struggle, Counce was arrested and found to have car keys for a red Saturn Astra parked nearby. The vehicle was positioned for a quick getaway.
Counce has been charged with robbery, theft under $100, and resisting arrest. He was released on his own recognizance following a court hearing on December 30. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 28, 2025, in the Charles District Court.
