James Shand Jailed for Over 17 Years for Child Sexual Offences in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, UK – A 57-year-old Birmingham man has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison after being convicted of multiple child sexual offences.
James Shand, of Woodgate Lane, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, June 2, following convictions on 12 separate counts, including sexual assault and inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. Although he only pleaded guilty to five of the charges, the court found him guilty on all counts.
The offences spanned a range of serious sexual crimes against minors, including:
Multiple counts of sexual assault on a female
Engaging in sexual activity in the presence of children aged 13 to 15
Causing or inciting girls under 13 to engage in sexual activity
Notable sentences within the total term include:
12 years imprisonment with an additional 4-year licence extension for one count of inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity
Five years and three months on a separate incitement charge
15 months imprisonment consecutively added to the above for a separate incident
The total sentence amounts to 17 years and 3 months, making it one of the more significant punishments handed down for non-penetrative child sex offences in recent cases.
Shand will be placed on the Sex Offender Register for life. Additionally, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a Restraining Order have been imposed on him, both to remain in effect until further order.
The court also stated that Shand “may be barred from working with children and vulnerable adults” as a result of the convictions.
This case is a sobering reminder of the long-term trauma inflicted by such crimes, and the legal consequences awaiting those found guilty of child exploitation.
