ATMORE, Ala. — A 67-year-old man, James Peoples, was arrested on June 7 in connection with drug possession and theft following a shoplifting incident at Walmart, according to the Atmore Police Department.

Sgt. Darrell McMann, APD Public Information Officer, stated that officers responded to a call around 1:25 p.m. regarding a shoplifting complaint at Walmart. The suspect had left the store before officers arrived, but was soon spotted on North Main Street.

“When officers attempted to make contact, the suspect fled on foot,” McMann said. “After a brief pursuit, the suspect—later identified as James Peoples—was apprehended.”

Officers recovered the stolen merchandise from the incident and found a small amount of crack cocaine on Peoples, along with drug paraphernalia commonly used to ingest narcotics.

Peoples now faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft of property in the fourth degree, and attempting to elude a police officer.

He was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton, where he awaits further legal proceedings.
