A 35-year-old man, James Chater, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for rape, harassment, and non-fatal strangulation in the Sleaford area. Chater, who previously lived in Sleaford, appeared at Lincoln Crown Court on 7 November.
Chater admitted two charges before his trial but denied rape. Following the trial, he was found guilty of rape. He has also been added to the sex offender register and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Detective Constable Kieron Stewart, who led the investigation, praised the victim and others who came forward. He described Chater’s actions as “reprehensible” and emphasized that the investigation would not have been possible without the bravery of witnesses.
“This sends a message to any would-be offender – we will pursue you and use all lines of enquiry available,” Stewart said. “We will also do everything possible to support victims who come forward.”
Lincolnshire Police encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual offences to report it promptly. They said, “Even if you’re not 100% sure, we want to hear from you so that we can ensure your safety.”
