by Amelia Crawford

ROME, GA — A Lindale man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing a car and using a deceased person’s identity to fraudulently sell it for scrap.

James Dewayne Barker, 40, was arrested in Rome and accused of taking a 2005 Nissan Altima from the Circle K Park and Ride lot on Cartersville Highway on May 24.

According to reports, Barker fraudulently used the identity of a deceased individual to sign a bill of sale and sell the car to Dempsey Towing. Authorities said the vehicle actually belonged to a living woman, not the deceased victim he impersonated.

Barker now faces the following charges:

Theft by taking a motor vehicle

Felony theft by deception

Identity fraud

He was taken into custody following an investigation by local law enforcement.
