Two individuals were arrested in Pulwama district for allegedly extorting money from the public by falsely claiming close connections with law enforcement authorities.
The arrested accused have been identified as Jaliya Parveen, a resident of Monghal in Anantnag, and Bilal Ahmad Rah, from Chanapora in Srinagar.
According to a police spokesperson, the investigation began after Mushtaq Ahmad Dar of Naristan filed a complaint stating that the duo had been posing as having ties with police officials. They reportedly demanded money from individuals under investigation or called in for questioning, exploiting fear of legal consequences.
As the inquiry unfolded, multiple victims stepped forward, alleging that they too had been coerced and threatened by the pair.
Tral Police swiftly registered a case and took both suspects into custody. Authorities confirmed that charges were filed under relevant legal provisions, and further investigation is ongoing.
