WASHINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) – An Ansonia man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing credit cards from an unlocked car in Washington, Connecticut, and racking up over $3,000 in fraudulent purchases, according to state police.

Jacek Gwiazda, 18, was charged with second-degree larceny, four counts of payment card theft, second-degree identity theft, and related offenses.

The case began on March 21 when police received a report from a house-sitter who said their purse had been stolen from an unlocked car. Inside were four credit cards and $70 in cash. While the purse was later recovered roadside with the cards inside, the victim began receiving fraud alerts for unauthorized purchases.

Police obtained surveillance video showing a hooded individual during a vehicle break-in in New Milford, and later, footage from retailers confirmed a man using the stolen cards to buy gift cards and other items.

Investigators said charges made with the stolen cards exceeded $3,000.

Gwiazda, who state police described as a “known vehicle thief,” was previously arrested in April along with six others in connection with stolen vehicle cases across Connecticut. West Haven police identified him from surveillance footage and clothing linked to the card thefts.

He was processed at Torrington Superior Court on May 6.
