Romance Scammer J.D. Arrested in Phnom Penh for Defrauding Women Online
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — A 28-year-old man identified as J.D. has been arrested by Cambodia’s Department of Anti-Technology Crime for allegedly operating an elaborate romance scam targeting women on social media.
The arrest, made under the direction of Gen. Sar Thet, Commissioner-General of the National Police, and guided by the Deputy Commissioner-General, followed an investigation launched on July 1, 2025, into online romantic deception.
J.D. reportedly created a fake Facebook account, using stolen photos to pose as a wealthy businessman or high-ranking official. He used these images to gain the trust of unsuspecting women, many of whom fell victim to his false persona.
Once he had established trust, J.D. fabricated emergencies—such as customs issues or work-related problems—claiming he urgently needed financial assistance. Victims were manipulated into transferring tens of thousands of dollars.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court issued a warrant for J.D.’s arrest, and legal proceedings are underway.
Authorities are reminding the public to verify identities on social platforms and to exercise caution before sharing personal or financial information with online acquaintances.
