An immigration officer, Dabiet Onyemi Gilbert, has been sentenced to one year in prison for defrauding a job seeker of N800,000. Gilbert faced prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a single charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. The EFCC acted on a petition from the victim, leading to Gilbert’s investigation, prosecution, and subsequent conviction.

Justice H.H. Kereng of the Gombe State High Court handed down the sentence.

In a related case, Saleh Haruna has received a five-year prison sentence for forgery and intent to defraud. Haruna was accused of conspiring with Mohammed Mustapha Sallah to defraud a victim of N950,000 while posing as a land seller.

Justice Muazu Abubakar of the Bauchi State High Court sentenced Haruna.

The EFCC has praised these convictions as a significant victory in its ongoing fight against fraud and corruption in Nigeria.

Additionally, the EFCC has arraigned Mohammed Mustapha Sallah on three counts related to conspiracy, forgery, and intent to defraud. His case is adjourned until July 8, 2024, for further hearings.
