An NHS healthcare worker who sexually assaulted two patients at the hospital where he was employed has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
Ieuan Crump, 26, of Gilfach, Caerphilly, was found guilty by a jury at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court of nine counts of sexual assault, including three counts of assault by penetration. He had denied all allegations.
The offences took place in August 2021 while Crump was working as a healthcare support worker at the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran. The court heard that he carried out fake and completely unnecessary medical examinations on two female patients, abusing his position of trust for his own sexual gratification.
Victim personal statements revealed the profound and lasting impact of the abuse. One woman described the severe effect on her mental health and said she now struggles to trust medical professionals. Another victim said the assaults left her feeling fearful and unable to feel safe around men, stating that the betrayal by a healthcare worker had deeply affected her confidence in seeking medical care.
The court heard how Crump’s actions shattered the victims’ sense of safety at a time when they were vulnerable and entitled to professional care. The sentencing judge described the offences as a serious breach of trust and said the lengthy prison term reflected the gravity of the crimes.
The case serves as a stark reminder that abuse of trust within healthcare settings will be treated with the utmost seriousness by the courts.
