Ian Cramer, the 43-year-old son of North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer, was sentenced to 28 years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a fatal high-speed chase that resulted in the death of Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin.

The incident occurred on December 6, 2023, when Cramer, who had been under the influence of methamphetamine and bath salts, fled from a hospital and crashed into Deputy Martin’s patrol vehicle. Martin, 53, was killed in the collision, which followed a dangerous pursuit through multiple counties.

Cramer faced multiple charges, including homicide while fleeing a peace officer, reckless endangerment, and drug-related offenses. State District Judge Bobbi Weiler sentenced Cramer to 38 years, with 10 years suspended and three years of probation. The judge also recommended treatment for Cramer’s addiction and mental health issues, but noted that Cramer would likely serve only a portion of the 28 years due to parole eligibility.

During the hearing, Cramer expressed remorse for his actions, stating that the crash was an accident and apologizing to Deputy Martin’s family. “I had no intention to do any of this,” he said, emphasizing his desire to seek help for his addiction and mental health struggles.

The court proceedings focused heavily on Cramer’s long-standing issues with mental illness, with his mother, Kris Cramer, stating that her son had “hurt his brain a lot” and was dealing with a mental health crisis. She took responsibility for the incident, explaining that she had taken Ian to the hospital due to mental health concerns prior to the tragic events.

Cramer’s actions on the day of the crash included fleeing from deputies, driving at speeds over 100 mph, and continuing to evade arrest even after his tires were spiked. His reckless driving culminated in a head-on crash that killed Deputy Martin, a beloved law enforcement officer known for his kind nature.

Senator Kevin Cramer, who has publicly stated that his son suffers from serious mental health disorders, expressed disappointment in the handling of mental health issues in the case. Despite his concerns, the senator acknowledged that Ian’s actions ultimately led to the tragedy.

Ian Cramer’s legal battles are not over, as he is also facing felony charges related to separate incidents involving theft, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment from earlier events at the Bismarck hospital. A jury trial is scheduled for January.

This case highlights the complexities of mental health issues within the criminal justice system and the devastating consequences of drug abuse and reckless behavior.
