Former BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children.
The alleged offences occurred between 2020 and 2022 and involve 37 images shared via a WhatsApp chat, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Edwards, 62, was arrested in November 2023 and charged in June following an investigation. He is set to appear in court in London on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that Edwards is facing charges related to images exchanged between December 2020 and April 2022.
The charges include possessing six category A images, which are the most serious form of indecent images, 12 category B images, and 19 category C images. A conviction could lead to several years of imprisonment.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), “making indecent images” includes a broad range of activities such as opening an email with such an image, downloading it from a website, or receiving it via social media—even if unsolicited or as part of a group.
Edwards, who left the BBC in April, was one of the broadcaster’s most prominent and highest-paid news anchors, regularly presenting the BBC One Ten O’Clock News and leading coverage of major national events.
The CPS also reminded the public that the case is ongoing, and nothing should be published that could interfere with future proceedings.
