In a growing trend of cyber fraud, police in Assam have apprehended Hizbul Bari, a suspect accused of impersonating a representative of a well-known online clothing brand to scam unsuspecting buyers.
Bari allegedly created fake business profiles on social media, luring customers with attractive deals and offers. One confirmed victim, Kausar Jahan from Delhi, was tricked into transferring Rs 11,500 for clothing products that were never delivered.
After realizing she had been duped, Jahan filed a complaint with the authorities. A swift investigation ensued, using technical surveillance and coordination with local law enforcement in Assam, which ultimately led to Bari’s arrest.
During the operation, police recovered a mobile phone used in the fraudulent activities. Investigators believe Bari may have scammed multiple individuals using similar tactics, and an ongoing probe is aiming to uncover the full scope of the fraud.
Authorities have urged the public to be cautious when engaging in transactions with unverified online sellers, especially on social media platforms where scams are becoming increasingly common.
