Suspects caught after ATM tampering at Carlinville Bank

by Sophia Bennett

HILLSBORO, Ill. — On November 26, 2025, at approximately 7:27 p.m., Hillsboro Police responded to an ATM alarm at Carlinville National Bank (CNB), 549 S. Main St. Initial checks found the scene secure, but the alarm company later confirmed that unknown individuals had opened and begun tampering with the ATM.

Bank staff contacted their security officer, who provided photographs of the suspect vehicle. Using a nearby License Plate Reader (LPR), Hillsboro police captured a license plate that appeared stolen, prompting a multi-agency response.

Officers from the Litchfield Police Department located the vehicle at the Mr. Fuel truck stop #4 on Corvette Dr. in Litchfield. A Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy assisted in taking one suspect into custody. The second suspect fled on foot toward RP Lumber, jumped a fence, and was found hiding inside a warehouse.

The suspects were identified as 24-year-old Erik Frank Cordero Gomez and 33-year-old Jose Salas-Lozada, both believed to be undocumented Venezuelan citizens. They were booked into the Montgomery County Jail on local charges of attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools. Gomez also faced charges from Litchfield Police for resisting arrest, while Salas-Lozada had an outstanding federal warrant for aggravated battery on a federal officer.

Hillsboro Police continue to investigate the case with support from multiple local, state, and federal agencies.
