CLAYTON COUNTY, Iowa – A 32-year-old Garnavillo man is facing a series of charges after a chaotic string of events involving two stolen vehicles and a crash that spanned multiple counties in northeast Iowa.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office reported that a vehicle was stolen from a business in Garnavillo around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday. That vehicle was later found in Buchanan County, having been involved in a crash.
Shortly after the crash, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of another vehicle theft near the crash scene. That second vehicle was later recovered in Clayton County, near Millville.
A coordinated investigation involving several law enforcement agencies led to the arrest of Henry Berns, 32, of Garnavillo.
Berns has been charged by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office with second-degree theft, interference with official acts, and driving while his license was suspended. Additionally, the Garnavillo Police Department charged him with first-degree theft and three counts of driving while suspended. More charges from Buchanan County are expected as the investigation continues.
Agencies involved in the investigation include the Clayton, Buchanan, and Dubuque County sheriff’s offices, the Garnavillo and Dubuque police departments, and the Iowa State Patrol.
