Heather Smith Freed on Bond in Holts Summit Murder Case

Accused shooter released on $150K bond, GPS monitored

CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. — Heather Smith, the 37-year-old woman charged in the fatal shooting of Kara M. Dills, has been released from the Callaway County Jail after posting a $150,000 bond.

Smith was arrested on April 18 for the April 13 shooting at the Hunter Lane Apartments near Holts Summit. She faces charges including:

Second-degree murder

Armed criminal action

First-degree endangering the welfare of a child

Three counts of unlawful use of a weapon

According to court documents, nine witnesses, including several children, were present during the altercation and saw the incident unfold.

On April 28, Judge Christopher Wilson set Smith’s bond with several conditions:

No contact with the Hunter Lane Apartments or being within 500 feet of the property

GPS monitoring

Prohibition from possessing firearms

Smith was released the next day, on the afternoon of April 29.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 28, 2025, as the investigation continues into the deadly confrontation that shocked the local community.
