A New Jersey man, Hadi Matar, was convicted for the 2022 attempted murder of author Salman Rushdie during a speaking event in Chautauqua, New York. Matar attacked Rushdie on stage, stabbing him multiple times, leading to severe injuries. The attack also injured Henry Reese, who was moderating the event. Matar was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder and assault after a brief jury deliberation. Prosecutors presented compelling video evidence, which showed Matar’s targeted assault. Matar’s defense, however, argued that the attack was chaotic and not premeditated.

Salman Rushdie testified during the trial, describing his terrifying experience, while Reese also recounted his efforts to intervene. Matar, who did not testify, rejected a plea deal prior to the trial. Sentencing is scheduled for April 23, with Matar facing up to 25 years in prison for attempted murder. Additionally, Matar faces federal terrorism charges related to his alleged connections with Hezbollah.
