The Crime Branch of Guwahati Police has arrested a gang of five individuals involved in a large-scale vehicle theft operation spanning Assam and other northeastern states. The arrests were made following actionable intelligence inputs, police sources said.
The suspects, identified as Raju Das and Montu Barman from Nalbari, Junmoni Deka from Baksa, Raju Deka from Barpeta, and Jayanta Haloi from Noonmati in Guwahati, are believed to have been actively stealing parked vehicles for several years. Their method typically involves targeting vehicles in public places when owners are absent.
Authorities suspect the gang’s operations extend beyond Assam, with ongoing investigations into potential cross-border connections to other Northeast states.
This arrest follows last month’s exposure of a significant car theft racket by Dispur Police. That gang, led by Rustam Ali, Inamul Ali, and Ali Akbar, targeted luxury vehicles, including Boleros, in Dispur’s Christian Basti area. Stolen cars were then sold cheaply to three youths from Manipur—Ratan Singh, Rishikesh Singh, and Lanjung Po Golam—feeding a regional black market for stolen vehicles.
Police credit coordinated inter-state efforts for disrupting these theft syndicates and making key arrests, aiming to curb the growing car theft menace in the region.
