A Guwahati man, Dheeraj Pao, was arrested on Friday for allegedly defrauding a resident of Arunachal Pradesh out of a whopping Rs92 lakh. The fraudster lured the victim, Jumda Padu, into a non-existent project to install mobile towers in Arunachal Pradesh, promising substantial returns.
According to Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh, despite collecting the significant amount of money from Padu, Pao failed to deliver on his promises. The fraudster also avoided communication, making it difficult for the victim to recover the funds.
After a detailed investigation and intelligence gathering, the police traced Pao’s whereabouts and apprehended him at his residence in Guwahati with the assistance of the Assam Police on Thursday evening.
The case follows another recent arrest in the region: Beauty Das was apprehended earlier in Cooch Behar district, West Bengal, in July, for defrauding multiple victims out of over Rs27 lakh. Das, who worked as a collector for two cooperative societies in Nirjuli, allegedly misappropriated money from local residents, including Pintu Taid and Dugi Vivek.
Both of these cases highlight the increasing prevalence of fraudulent schemes that exploit unsuspecting individuals, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and report such scams immediately.
