JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Gustavo Guzman, a Terry Parker High School teacher and Duval County’s 2024 Teacher of the Year, was arrested Tuesday on felony domestic battery by strangulation charges, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance involving Guzman and the victim. The victim reported a year-long pattern of escalating incidents and said the altercation occurred when they attempted to leave the residence.
Though officers noted no visible injuries on the victim, a torn shower curtain on the floor suggested a struggle had taken place. Guzman’s own statements during the investigation reportedly led to the charge being elevated to a felony, specifically involving strangulation.
The victim declined to be photographed but submitted a written statement. Guzman was taken into custody at the scene.
According to Duval County Public Schools, Guzman also serves as site director for the 5000 Role Models for Excellence program, which mentors young African American boys.
When reached for comment by Action News Jax, Guzman responded, “No comment.”
