Kutch: Gujarat police have arrested two men in India, Panchabhai Koli of Gedi and Javed Ghanchi of Umaiya, for a string of temple thefts in Kutch district. The duo reportedly used Google Maps to identify remote temples before carrying out burglaries at night.
The case came to light after a theft at Khodiyar Mata and Ramapir temples in Moti Hamirpar village, where jewellery worth Rs 1,10,150 was stolen. Acting on intelligence, police intercepted the accused while they were allegedly heading to Radhanpur to dispose of the stolen items. Authorities recovered jewellery, cash, and mobile phones from their possession.
Investigations revealed that Ghanchi, skilled with mobile technology, would scan Google Maps to locate temples in secluded areas. The duo then traveled on foot at night, using a sharp iron tool—typically used for cutting coconuts—to break locks and steal valuables.
The arrests also helped solve multiple other thefts, including cases at Selari temple. Recovered property includes 14 silver umbrellas, a silver-like metal snake, cash, and mobile phones, valued at around Rs 10 lakh, along with an additional Rs 2,28,160 in cash.
