The Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has taken decisive action against two doctors involved in the Khyati Hospital scam in Ahmedabad. Dr. Sanjay Muljibhai Patoliya and Dr. Shaileshkumar Amrutlal Anand have had their medical licenses suspended for three years, following a meeting of the GMC’s General Body. Both doctors were found guilty of unethical practices and were ordered to immediately surrender their licenses.
The scandal revolved around Khyati Multispeciality Hospital, where a medical camp in Kadi, under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), involved performing unnecessary angiographies and heart stent implants on 19 patients who did not require the procedures. The malpractice was initially uncovered after the deaths of two patients, Nagarbhai Senma (59) and Mahesh Barot (45), in November 2024.
Further investigations revealed more deaths, bringing the total to nine, all linked to unnecessary medical procedures conducted by the hospital. As a result, several individuals were arrested, including the hospital’s CEO, Chirag Rajput, and its medical director, Dr. Sanjay Patoliya. The prime suspect, Kartik Patel, the hospital director, was arrested after evading authorities for a period.
The fraudulent practices at Khyati Hospital included organizing fake medical camps in rural areas such as Borisana village, where healthy individuals were misdiagnosed with severe cardiac conditions. These patients, including even an 18-year-old, were subjected to unnecessary invasive procedures like angioplasty.
The hospital exploited the government’s PMJAY scheme, which provides health insurance for low-income citizens, claiming substantial reimbursements for these fraudulent treatments. Over the course of 18 months, Khyati Hospital accumulated approximately Rs 11 crore in fraudulent claims, with 70% of the revenue coming from PMJAY beneficiaries.
Legal action continues as authorities further investigate the scam.
