Suspects stole odd items before high-speed pursuit

SUSSEX, Wis. — A bizarre theft turned dangerous over Memorial Day weekend when two men stole everyday items from Sussex stores and then led police on a 130-mile-per-hour chase through two counties.

The incident began on Sunday, May 18, 2025, when Gindeal Lyons, 33, and Sylvester McCurry, 31, reportedly stole backpacks and laundry baskets from Dollar Tree and filled them with merchandise. Just 20 minutes later, they hit a nearby Walgreens, stealing antacids, memory supplements, and women’s Rogaine—valued at nearly $1,400.

A Lisbon deputy spotted the suspects’ vehicle shortly after, sparking a high-speed chase. Wisconsin DOT footage captured patrol units in pursuit as the suspects sped east on I-94 through Brookfield, nearly striking multiple vehicles, including a motorcycle.

Police say speeds topped 130 mph on Moorland Road, with the chase stretching over 24 miles and continuing into Milwaukee County. The pursuit was called off near I-41 and Beloit Road for safety reasons.

Later, a Milwaukee County sheriff’s deputy located the suspects’ car in the Mitchell Interchange. Lyons and McCurry attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by nearly a dozen officers.

In interviews, Lyons told police he “needed” the items from Dollar Tree. He denied stealing from Walgreens or brandishing a firearm during the incident.

Both men appeared in court on Friday, May 30, and pleaded not guilty to robbery and fleeing charges. Lyons’ bond was set at $75,000, while McCurry’s was set at $100,000.
