German Man Michel Thomas Arrested in Malta Over EU Warrant

Thomas Faces Drug, Theft & Robbery Charges in Germany

by Amelia Crawford

A German national, Michel Thomas, has been arrested in Malta following a European Arrest Warrant issued by Germany. The warrant accuses Thomas of drug trafficking, selling stolen cars, armed robbery, and fraud.

The arrest took place at his girlfriend’s residence, where Maltese police officers informed him of his rights. He was given a copy of the European Arrest Warrant in both English and German.

During the court hearing before Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech, the magistrate confirmed that Thomas was the individual named in the warrant. The defense did not challenge the validity of the arrest.

When informed of his extradition request to Germany, Thomas contested his return. However, since the charges listed in the warrant are part of the Scheduled List of Offences, he could not argue against his prosecution in Malta.

His defense team requested bail, but both the prosecution and magistrate opposed it due to the seriousness of the offenses. The prosecution also revealed that Thomas is already facing separate charges in Malta for wilful damage and disturbing public peace.

The magistrate denied bail, stating that the Maltese court cannot overturn a warrant issued by another court. The case was adjourned to March 17 before Magistrate Leonard Caruana.

Thomas was represented by lawyers Herman Mula and Silvan Pulis.
