ATLANTA, GA (Atlanta News First) – Investigators from the office of Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King have successfully dismantled an elaborate insurance fraud scheme targeting local car dealerships and their customers.
In November, Clayton County police arrested 33-year-old Deamarkis Barber from Conyers, who faces multiple insurance fraud charges spanning across Gwinnett, DeKalb, Fulton, Cobb, Douglas, Paulding, and Rockdale counties. He is currently being held at the Clayton County Jail.
The investigation dates back to a 2021 arrest warrant, with Barber allegedly selling counterfeit car insurance policies through Cash App and other payment platforms. Reports suggest Barber was pocketing between $3,000 and $5,000 a month by defrauding hundreds of customers.
Authorities confirmed that Barber lacked a valid insurance license in Georgia but operated under three fake companies: All-Citi Insurance Group, Dirt Cheap Insurance, and Policy Pro.
Police believe Barber recruited car dealership salesmen to promote his fake insurance policies. Once a customer agreed, Barber would send a text message with a policy and a request for a monthly payment.
Following an investigation prompted by Atlanta News First Consumer Investigator Better Call Harry, additional dealerships came forward, leading to more complaints about the scam.
