George Russell Arrested After Allegedly Stealing Ambulance, Facing Multiple Charges
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A Louisville man is behind bars after police say he stole an ambulance from a downtown hospital and was connected to multiple other crimes.
George Russell, 31, was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on April 14 and is facing a long list of charges tied to the theft of an ambulance on February 28, as well as burglaries, assaults, and robbery incidents.
Police say Russell was caught on surveillance footage entering the ambulance bay at UofL Health – Jewish Hospital, where he allegedly stole an ambulance belonging to the St. Matthews Fire Department. Additional footage from a nearby business reportedly shows Russell abandoning the vehicle shortly after and fleeing down an alley.
On Monday night, an LMPD officer recognized Russell in downtown Louisville and attempted to arrest him. According to arrest records, Russell ran and tried to enter Louisville Slugger Field before being tased and taken into custody. He had seven active warrants at the time.
Russell now faces charges including:
Fleeing or evading police
Resisting arrest
Assault (2nd and 4th degree)
Probation violation
Theft by unlawful taking over $10,000
Three counts of burglary
Robbery
Criminal mischief
During his arraignment on Tuesday, Russell pleaded not guilty. His bond was set at $50,000, and he has been appointed a public defender. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 23.
LMPD is expected to release additional details in a press conference on Wednesday.
