NEWARK, DE — A routine traffic stop by Newark Police escalated into a foot chase, leading to the arrest of Freddy Villanueva Alonso, a Wilmington man, on April 18, 2025. Alonso is now facing several charges, including identity theft, following the incident.

The situation began around 5:22 p.m. when officers noticed a vehicle displaying a fictitious Pennsylvania registration. After pulling the car over, the driver reportedly provided a fraudulent foreign driver’s license as identification.

As police questioned him further, the suspect fled the scene on foot. This prompted officers to pursue him, and after a brief chase, they apprehended him without any reported injuries.

Subsequent investigation revealed the suspect’s identity as 34-year-old Freddy Villanueva Alonso of Wilmington, Delaware. Authorities also discovered that Villanueva Alonso was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant related to identity theft and forgery charges from another agency.

As a result of the incident, Villanueva Alonso now faces a series of charges, including:

Identity Theft

False Statement

Criminal Impersonation

Resisting Arrest

Five Traffic Offenses

After his arrest, Villanueva Alonso was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #11 and issued a cash bond of $9,950. He was then transferred to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, where he remains in custody, unable to post bail.

Newark Police have stated that all charges against Villanueva Alonso are allegations at this time. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Additional details regarding the investigation have not been released.
