GLASGOW, Scotland — April 16, 2025 — Frank McAveety, a former leader of Glasgow City Council and ex-Scottish Labour MSP, has been arrested and charged with fraud offenses related to incidents between 2022 and 2024.
McAveety, 62, who served as the leader of the council twice—once from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2015 to 2017—was charged in connection with alleged electoral fraud. The charges reportedly stem from his attempt to gain a seat on Glasgow City Council during the 2022 elections.
In addition to his tenure as council leader, McAveety represented Glasgow Shettleston as a Scottish Labour MSP from 1999 to 2011. The charges are said to involve fraudulent actions surrounding his 2022 electoral campaign.
A statement from Police Scotland confirmed the arrest of a 62-year-old man in the Glasgow area. The police did not release McAveety’s name but confirmed the arrest was related to fraud offenses spanning from 2022 to 2024. Investigations are ongoing.
