Fraga Munteanu, a 47-year-old woman, has been charged in connection with a distraction theft involving a stolen diamond ring in downtown Toronto.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Wednesday near Blue Jays Way and Front Street. According to police, the suspect approached the victim, handed over a rose, and asked for money. She then allegedly began massaging and kissing the victim’s hand, during which she stole the diamond ring.
Investigators believe the ring was passed to another suspect, and both individuals fled the scene shortly after.
Police arrested Munteanu and charged her with theft over $5,000. The charge has not yet been tested in court. Authorities say there is no description available for the second suspect, and they believe there may be additional victims.
Toronto police have recently reported an alarming increase in distraction-style thefts. As of September 3, nearly 375 cases have been reported citywide—compared to just 28 during the same time last year.
