Four Arrested in Kolkata for Fraudulently Issuing SIM Cards

Arrested for involvement in cyber crimes and possible anti-national activities

by Ananya Mehta

The Kolkata Police arrested four individuals, including Anirban Saha, his wife Deblina Chakraborty, Ripan Saha, and Sobham Debnath, for fraudulently obtaining mobile SIM cards in the names of unaware individuals. These SIM cards were misused in various cyber crimes and may have been distributed among individuals involved in anti-national activities.

The arrests occurred following an investigation into complaints of cyber crimes where SIM cards issued under one name were used by others. Police found a large cache of SIM cards, biometric machines, and mobile phones during the arrests. The accused operated two Point of Sales (POS) terminals where they illegally collected fingerprints from unsuspecting customers. These fingerprints were later used to issue additional SIM cards, which were then sold to cyber criminals across the country.

The police have seized 237 SIM cards (including raw and activated cards), and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the crimes and potential connections to national security threats.
